Employer Responsibilities

During the internship, it is expected that employers will:

  • Extend all job offers through the Experiential Learning Specialist/Assistant (see the Internship Hiring Process page for more).
  • Confirm acceptance of job offers and terms of employment in writing to the student and to the institution.
  • Honour all offers of employment.
  • Provide accurate and complete information on job responsibilities, compensation, and benefits.
  • Assign a mentor or advisor to assist the student to identify goals and clarify roles and responsibilities.
  • Treat the student as an employee, and let their expectations be like those of their co-workers.
  • Provide the student with relevant training and development opportunities.
  • Monitor the student’s progress and provide formal/informal feedback on a timely basis to both the students and to the institution.
  • Complete agreements required by the faculty and university and provide the Experiential Learning Specialist/Assistant with a copy of the employment contract.*

We also ask that employers work with the student to complete the following assignments, which are required for successful completion of the internship program (ARTHUM 3000A/B/Y / ARTHUM3001 A/B)

Student and Partner Internship Agreement

Defines and gives the details of the internship and outlines the student’s and internship supervisor’s responsibilities for the duration of the internship.

Learning Outcomes Assessment

A short assignment that the student must complete in consultation with their internship supervisor during the first week of the internship to help establish goals for the internship, which will later help the student articulate their learning from the internship experience.

Midpoint Check-In

Halfway through the internship, both the student and internship supervisor are required to assess the progress of the internship up to that point.

Final Report

At the end of the internship, the student completes a final report that details their experience; considers their expectations, challenges, and personal and professional development; and relates their experience to their coursework and program of study. The supervisor must also complete a Final Evaluation.

Internship Reflection

At the end of the internship, the student must submit either a video reflection or written reflection that highlights their internship experience and what they learned. The Internship Reflection must be submitted at the same time as the Final Report.

In the rare event that an employer may wish to terminate an intern or an internship position, please contact us as early as possible.

Please contact the Experiential Learning Specialist/Assistant with any questions regarding employer responsibilities.
