Application Guidelines

To qualify for an Internship Course Placement, a student must be in the 4th year of a Visual Arts Program with a minimum 75% grade average in their Visual Arts courses. These requirements are in place because of the demands of the Internship. The internship placement provides the opportunity to apply what you have learned throughout your degree in real-world work situations.

Internship dates and timeframe:

Fall term courses start in early September and end in early December. Winter term courses start in early January and end in early April. Interns work approximately 6 to 8 hours a week, excluding fall and winter reading weeks and December holidays. Interns should determine reasonable start and end dates with workplace supervisors according to this schedule. Internships of 12 weeks receive 0.5 course credit and 24 weeks receive 1.0 course credit.

Expectations:

  • Internship students work 6-8 hours a week for course credit. Each placement is different; however, every placement requires dedication and focus.

  • Workplace supervisors expect students to fulfill professional obligations in their position as interns. Students are expected to maintain agreed upon work hours and schedules. They are expected to produce the materials/complete the tasks on time; work independently or with a team, as the job requires; and fulfill other responsibilities to ensure their continued employment.

  • When a student agrees to an Internship placement, they agree to behave responsibly and professionally at all times. It is the student’s responsibility to discuss the expectations and any concerns they may have about fulfilling any aspects of the position before the placement begins or as issues arise.

Assessment:

Each Intern will be supervised and evaluated on the job by a workplace supervisor at a partner institution. Internships are arranged and coordinated by the Undergraduate Chair, who is available to meet and will be in contact with the student and the supervisors on a regular basis. The final grade is assigned by the Undergraduate Chair based on the supervisor’s evaluation and the course assessments, including a weekly journal and a final report.
