close up image of a fish retina
This image was taken by the Zeiss AxioImager Z1 digital microscope at the Biotron Experimental Climate Change Research Facility and shows the H&E-stained paraffin oblique section through the retina of a Siamese fighting fish. In it, you can clearly see each rod cell is surrounded by eight cone cells (in the middle) and, at the bottom, pigment cells interdigitating between all of the sensory bodies. At the top, we see the ‘nuclear’ layer of sensory cells.
