The department plays a critical role in monitoring and managing climate change, air and water quality, pollution, wildlife, and environmental conservation efforts across the country.

A key aspect of ECCC’s work is its involvement in weather monitoring and forecasting, particularly through its surface weather observations. The department operates an extensive network of weather stations across Canada that collect real-time data on various meteorological parameters such as temperature, wind speed and direction, precipitation, atmospheric pressure, and humidity. These observations are essential for producing accurate weather forecasts, issuing severe weather warnings, and conducting climate research.

The surface weather observation network includes both automated and manual stations. Data from these stations not only supports day-to-day weather forecasting but is also crucial for industries like agriculture, transportation, and energy, as well as for emergency services in times of extreme weather events. ECCC also collaborates with other partner atmospheric monitoring networks such as government agencies, provinces, and international organizations to enhance weather monitoring and share data for better decision-making regarding climate and environmental management.

The current conditions are acquired from a variety of observing system operators and are provided in near-real time with limited quality assurance. Current condition information should not be considered as quality-controlled official values. The availability of values for every observation period is not guaranteed as they may be affected by observing system operations.

Below is a list of partner atmospheric monitoring networks that provide information through ECCC:
