John Charles Polanyi Prizes from the Council of Ontario Universities - 2024

The John Charles Polanyi Prizes from the Council of Ontario Universities (COU) are five prestigious research grants given annually to outstanding researchers in the early stages of their careers – beginning postdoctoral studies or new appointment as a faculty member at an Ontario university – to aid in research and professional development. The prizes have a value of $20,000 each and may be held along with any other financial support or research funds. They are awarded in the categories of physics, chemistry, literature, physiology or medicine, and economic science.

Eligibility

  • Applicants are normally residents in Ontario
  • Applicants must have received their doctoral degree from any recognized university in the world on or after September 1, 2021 and will have completed all the requirements for the doctoral degree by May 31, 2025
  • Either be planning to continue to post-doctoral studies, or hold a faculty appointment, in a recognized publicly assisted university in Ontario

Application Process

The complete application process consists of:

  • An application form
  • CV
  • Brief summary of doctoral thesis (one page)
  • A statement of research to be undertaken during the period of the award, prepared by the applicant (maximum of 2 pages, plus an additional 1 page for diagrams, bibliography, etc.)
  • A non-technical summary, to be written by the applicant (maximum 500 words)
  • Confidential letters from four assessors. Two of the assessors must not have been associated with the candidate as either a supervisor, or a member of the applicant’s supervisory committee, or a co-author and should preferably be from another university. These letters must be sent directly to the School of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (SGPS) at 深夜福利站 by December 2, 2024.
  • A letter from the Vice-Provost (Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies) clarifying the nature of the position to be held during the period of the prize.
