CIHR IMHA Inclusive Research Excellence Prizes
Aligned with CIHR’s commitment to champion a more inclusive concept of research excellence, the recognize completed research projects that foster and advance transparent and collaborative science, EDI, fundamental knowledge creation, knowledge mobilization, multiple ways of knowing, and non-traditional research methodologies.
Four prizes ($25,000 each) will be awarded in each of the following six pools:
- Indigenous Health
- Open Science
- Research Impact
- Team Science
- Patient Engagement
- Implementation Science
This is a one-time, non-renewable prize.
Key application considerations
Considerations for the Winter 2025 Competition
- Eligibility:
- The Nominated Principal Applicant (NPA) must be:
- An independent researcher who is an - or mid-career researchers, affilitated with a Canadian postsecondary institution and/or its affilitated institutions; or
- An individual affiliated with an Indigenous non-governmental organization in Canada with a research and/or knowledge translation mandate; OR
- An indigenous non-governmental organization in Canada with a research and/or knowledge translation mandate
- The NPA must have a their substantive role in Canada for the duration of the requested grant term
- The Institution Paid must be authorized to administer CIHR funds by the funding start date
- Applications in the pool of Indigenous Health Research must include at least one applicant who self-identifies as Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit or Métis) and/or can provide evidence of having with Indigenous Peoples.
- The applicant(s) must submit their application based on a completed research project
- As the NPA, an individual or individuals can apply to any of the six (6) research pools but they:
- cannot submit more than two applications.
- cannot submit more than one application per Research Pool.
- Within each pool, up to three (3) prizes will be reserved for Early-Career Researcher (ECR) Nominated Principal Applicants (NPAs).
- Winners from the 2023 and 2024 Prizes Competition are not eligible to submit the same application to this competition but may submit new applications.
- The Nominated Principal Applicant (NPA) must be:
- "Identify Participants" task and CV: List all particiants relevant to the prize in the "Identify Participants" task. All participants are required to submit a CV (excluding collaborators).
- Canadian academics and students: CIHR Biosketch
- Knowledge users, non-academics, Indigenous organizations, international applicants: CIHR Biosketch OR Applicant Profile CV
- NPA categories involving an Indigenous non-governmental organization: Applicant Profile CV (including a description of the organization)
- Patient partners: CIHR Biosketch OR Applicant Profile CV
- Summary of Research Proposal: The summary must address:
- Objectives of funding opportunity
- Evaluation criteria of the domain(s) selected
- Completed research outcome(s) of the domain(s) selected
- The health research area you work in
- You and/or your co-applications contribution (what work will the prize reflect)
- The NPA stakeholder group where relevant (ECR or MCR)
- Proposal Information: Must address all criteria listed in the Evaluation Criteria of the selected funding pool/research area (i.e., Indigenous Health Research, Open Science, Research Impact, Team Science, Patient Engagement and Implementation Science). Must not include references, charts, tables, figures and photographs.
- Attach documents supporting the proposal (e.g., references, charts, tables, figures, photographs, etc.) in the “Attachments - Research Proposal Appendix” (optional).
- The following page limits for the research proposal will apply:
- Research proposals submitted in English – 4 pages
- Research proposals submitted in French – 5 pages
- Any pages over the page limit identified above will be removed with no further notification to the Nominated Principal Applicant.

- Publications (optional) – Upload under "Publications“

- Formatting Guidelines: Guidelines apply to all attachments (including the research proposal) and must be followed:
- Font Size - 12pt
- Font Type - Times New Roman
- Line Spacing - Single
- Margins - 2 cm around all pages
- Page Size - Letter (8.5x11 in)

Registration
Researchers who intend to apply for a CIHR-IMHA Inclusive Research Excellence Prize must complete their registration in ResearchNet by/before January 23, 2025 8 p.m. EST
Full Application
Internal Deadline: Submit structurally complete draft for institutional review no later than February 13, 2025, 10 a.m. EDT.
External Deadline: Submit final version of your application no later than February 19, 2025, 10 a.m. EDT.
