Need-Based Awards are awarded to students based on a combination of academic merit, demonstration of financial need, and in some cases, non-academic requirements. To be considered for Need-Based Awards students are required to complete the Financial Assistance Profile Application (FAP). The FAP Application becomes available in mid-August each year through the . Please note that the deadline to submit the Financial Assistance Profile Application and any supporting documentation (if applicable) for Need-Based Award consideration is September 30. The FAP application is used for consideration for all need based awards, however, some awards also require supporting documentation.
Awarded annually to a student in any year registered in an English program in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities who has demonstrated financial need and has maintained a minimum 80% average. Awarded to full-time students in any undergraduate degree program based on a submission of poetry that is original, titled, and previously unpublished. Poems must be in English and may use any style of poetry. Poems will be judged for their originality, and for their use of form and technique, traditional or contemporary, in a skillful and creative way to create or intensify themes or effects. The total entry is not to exceed 4 pages for a maximum 150 lines and must be submitted to the Department of English by March 31. Further details regarding the format of submissions can be obtained from the Department of English. Recipients will be selected by a committee in the Department of English that will include at least one published writer from London and/or the University community. Awarded annually to a student enrolled in Year 2, 3 or 4 in the Honours Specialization in Creative Writing and English Language and Literature or Major in Theatre Studies program in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, who demonstrates excellence and potential in either Creative Writing or Theatre Studies. Students must have a minimum 70% average, with plans to work in the creative writing or theatre arts field after graduation.
A one-page statement outlining the candidate’s creative accomplishments and plans for their future career in creative writing or theatre studies must be submitted to the Departmental Office, English & Writing Studies at uenglish@uwo.ca by September 30th.
The Scholarship Committee of the Department of English & Writing Studies will select the recipient. Students are eligible to apply in Year 2, 3 and 4 and may receive the award in each year should they be selected. If there are no students who meet the criteria, the award will not be given out.
This award was established by a generous gift from the Hazel Cryderman-Wees Foundation in honour of Hazel’s sister-in-law, Mackie. Mackie Cryderman studied at the Winnipeg School of Art and at the Ontario College of Art, with a number of members from the Group of Seven. She created the vocational art department at the H.B. Beal Technical School in London, Ontario (currently known as H.B. Beal Secondary School). She also taught at 深夜福利站 and Fanshawe College. Mackie Cryderman was an accomplished artist in a variety of media, working in watercolour, oil, metal and leather as well as pursuits in jewelry making, graphic design and carving. Awarded to a Canadian citizen or permanent resident registered in any undergraduate or graduate program on Main campus at 深夜福利站 who submits, in English or French, any personal and recent work of creative writing, in any genre or length, on a theme of Canadian Heritage, that has not so far been published or entered in any other competition. Entries should be directed to the Department of English & Writing Studies by February 1. Established through the generosity of Marguerite R. Dow, Professor Emerita, The University of 深夜福利站 Ontario, who taught English and Drama in the Faculty of Education from 1965 to 1985.

Awarded annually to undergraduate students, in any Faculty, in the following five categories of Writing Studies: 1. Introductory Essay 2. Writing Advanced Essay Writing 3. Non-Fiction Manuscripts 4. For categories 1-4, students must submit their entries from Writing Studies courses taken during the Summer, Fall and Winter terms to the Writing Studies office for evaluation by April 30. For category 5, a public speaking competition will be held at the end of March each academic year. A committee within the Department of English and Writing Studies will select the recipients. Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student in his or her third year of the Honours Specialization in English Language and Literature or English Literature and Creative Writing, or a Double Major including English Language and Literature, in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (minimum 80% average). The recipient will be eligible to continue receiving the scholarship in fourth year provided he/she remains in the Honours Specialization in English Language and Literature or English Literature and Creative Writing, or a Double Major including English Language and Literature, and maintains an academic average of 70% and a full time course load. Preference will be given to a student with a demonstrated interest in journalism.
Students should submit a letter of application to the Chair of Undergraduate Studies, Department of English and Writing Studies by September 30.

Awarded annually for the best essay written by an undergraduate student registered in a Canadian Literature course at the Constituent University. Every year instructors of Canadian literature courses will be invited to recommend the best essay submitted for credit within the current academic year. The essays must be submitted for adjudication by April 30. The Chair of the Department of English will name a panel of three Canadian literature specialists to review the submissions and, within three weeks of the submission deadline, select the recipient. Awarded annually to an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities with the highest academic achievement in a course in Restoration and Eighteenth-Century British Literature (period 1660-1780). Students taking an online course in Restoration and Eighteenth-Century British Literature will not be eligible for the award. The recipient will be selected by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities Scholarships and Awards Committee. In the event of a tie, the recipient will be determined by the 18th-centuryists of the department who can review the course work collectively and recommend the winner. This award was established by Professor Lisa Zeitz, a faculty member in the Department of English, who dedicated her life to the understanding and teaching of a witty, complex and rewarding age in literature. The award is named in honour of Alexander Pope's large and beloved dog, "Bounce"; celebrated in portraits, verse and letters, Bounce was the subject of the last couplet the poet wrote: "Then Bounce ('tis all that Bounce can crave)/ Shall wag her Tail within the Grave." Christopher Armitage was born in England and studied at Oxford University where he met Pauline Brooks from Copper Cliff, Ontario, who was working in London, England at the time. They married and settled in London, Ontario and Christopher completed his Master’s Degree in English at 深夜福利站. After teaching at Huron College and Guelph University, Christopher completed his PhD at Duke University in 1967. Professor Armitage taught Shakespeare for more than 50 years at the University of North Carolina and received the Board of Governor’s Medal for his achievements. Pauline died in 1979.
Awarded on the basis of academic standing in first-year Arts or Social Sciences to a student who enrols in the second year of an Honours Specialization in English Language and Literature. The winner will be selected by the Scholarship Committee, on recommendation of the Department of English. The student selected must maintain at least an 80% average and remain in the Honours Specialization in English Language and Literature.
